Depending on location, travel to Banska Bystrica has various routes and options. For those traveling by personal car, Google Maps or any navigation service can provide the necessary routes. For those wishing to travel via mass transit, bus, train and airplane are the best options.

Travel by Plane
Banska Bystrica does not have any major airports. There are three nearby airports that we recommend traveling to:

Bratislava, Slovakia (BTS)
Distance from BB: 210 km (1h 35min drive by car and 3h bus ride)

Vienna, Austria (VIE)
Distance from BB: 280 km (2h 15min drive by car and 4h bus ride)

Budapest, Hungary (BUD)
Distance from BB: 180 km (2h 35min drive by car and very complicated travel by train or bus)

Traveling from Bratislava to Banska Bystrica
Bus (Mlynske Nivy Bus Station)
Once you arrive at Bratislava’s airport, the cheapest option to get to Banska Bystrica is to take a bus. The bus station is called Mlynske Nivy and is Bratislava’s main bus station. To get to this station from the airport, look for Bus 61 that leaves from the front of the Arrivals Terminal, Section B. From Mlynske Nivy Bus Station you can take direct bus to Banska Bystrica.

It is recommended to buy ticket upfront on the above link. However, if there is space in the bus, you can buy tickets directly from the bus driver.

Train (Central Train Station)
If you wish to take a train instead, you will still need to take Bus 61 from BTS airport to it’s final stop at Central Railway Station. Tickets may be purchased at the railway station. Prices may vary.

Traveling from Vienna to Banska Bystrica
Bus (RegioJet) – Recommended option
Once you fly into Vienna (Schwechat) you can take the RegioJet Bus to Bratislava Nivy bus station and then take the bus from Bratislava to Banska Bystrica. Prices: Vienna (Schwechat) – Bratislava from 4EUR, Bratislava – Banska Bystrica from 5EUR.

Bus (SLOVAK LINES)
From Vienna Airport, you can take the Slovak Lines Bus to Bratislava Nivy bus station and then take the bus from Bratislava to Banska Bystrica. Once you arrive to Bratislava, use the above directions for travel from Bratislava to Banska Bystrica. To find the bus stop at the Vienna airport, look for the words “Flughafen Wien Ankunftsebene”. Bus (EUROLINES)
The other option is to take the bus line Vienna Airport-Košice-Prešov and get off in ZVOLEN. From there you can take either train or another bus to Banska Bystrica (20-30 min ride).

Traveling from Budapest to Banska Bystrica
Budapest Airport offers many different options for travelers to and from the airport. Options include taking a taxi, minibus, public transport or train.

Bus (RegioJet) – Recommended option
Once you fly into Budapest you need to get to the city’s bus station. From there you can take the RegioJet Bus to Bratislava Nivy bus station and then take the bus from Bratislava to Banska Bystrica. Prices: Budapest – Bratislava – Banska Bystrica from 15EUR.
